چکیده

Background: Thermal injury can cause many changes in the skin-local responseand in the body in general –systemic response; the metabolic changes represent an important one among systemic response. Dyslipidemia after burn injury is one of the important alterations that resulted from many factors like hypermetabolic state in burn, release of hormones and inflammatory mediators, the aim of this study is to evaluate the occurrence of dyslipidemia after burn injury, and the evaluation of possible targeting of these changes in burned patients aiming to improve burn management and outcomes Patients and Methods: This study was carried out on 96 burned patients with different ages of both sexes and varying burn percentage group A, compared with group B which is 18 normal healthy subjects utilized for comparison. To each group, serum cholesterol, serum triglyceride and serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, were measured depending on standard methods. Results:Results of this study show the occurrence of changes in serum lipids of burned patients namely decrease in serum cholesterol level, increase in serum TG level and decrease in serum HDL level compared to normal subjects. Conclusion:This study clearly showed the beneficial role of measuring serum cholesterol, TG and HDL in burned patients, also show the importance of targeting changes that occur in their levels along burn course which may have beneficial effect through protecting organ damage and lead to increase survival rates among burn subjects and improve burn outcome.

Ameliorative Effects of Pistacia atlantica Resin Oil on Experimentally-Induced Skin Burn in Rat

Background and objectives: Severe burn damage and its consequences are life threatening which can complicate patients’ health. Burn damage increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation which leads to severe damage to tissues and is implicated in burn shock. Some medicinal and traditional plants are considered as safe, natural and inexpensive sources for treatment of differ...

P108: Microglia in Traumatic Brain Injury

Microglia is one of the first innate immune components. These cells account about 5 to 10% of the entire adult brain cells and are activated by trauma. Complex-mediated inflammatory responses occur through cellular and molecular events during and after the traumatic brain injury (TBI). In-lesion area astrocytes, microglia, and damaged neurons begin to secrete cytokines and chemokines. Microglia...

The function of miRNAs and their potential as therapeutic targets in burn-induced insulin resistance (review).

Burns are common accidental injuries. The main clinical manifestations of severe burn injury are insulin resistance and high metabolism. Insulin resistance results in hyperglycemia, which may lead to skeletal muscle wasting and suspended wound healing. It also elevates the risk of infection and sepsis. Studies have indicated that insulin receptor (IR) and insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1) are...

Myosin Light Chain Kinase Mediates Intestinal Barrier Disruption following Burn Injury

BACKGROUND Severe burn injury results in the loss of intestinal barrier function, however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Myosin light chain (MLC) phosphorylation mediated by MLC kinase (MLCK) is critical to the pathophysiological regulation of intestinal barrier function. We hypothesized that the MLCK-dependent MLC phosphorylation mediates the regulation of intestinal barrier functi...

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor mediates late cardiac dysfunction after burn injury.

We have recently demonstrated that macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a myocardial depressant protein and that MIF mediates late, prolonged cardiac dysfunction after endotoxin challenge in mice. Because many factors, including endotoxin, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiac dysfunction after burn injury, we tested the hypothesis that MIF might also be the mediator of...
